Method transparency
Word count: counts words by spaces/whitespace and ignores extra whitespace. This makes repeated spaces, tabs and line breaks behave predictably.
Character count: one total includes spaces; the second excludes whitespace. Sentence count: an estimate based on sentence-ending punctuation. Paragraph count: non-empty blocks separated by blank lines. Reading time: total words divided by the selected average words-per-minute rate.

Spaces are not counted as separate words. The tool does show a separate character total with spaces so you can compare both values.
How can I count paragraphs and sentences online?
Paragraphs are counted from non-empty text blocks separated by blank lines. Sentences are estimated from common terminal punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks.
